Drawing mastery is one of its most notable features, represented with a “pure" decorative style, which is predominant in these pieces, including abstract floral motives, symbolic animal representations and even geometric shapes. Traditional Mexican Elements are added to its themes: Such as the Eagle, Snake, Nahual (A Shapeshifting being commonly found in the Mexican mythology), Nopal (Cactus), and Pre-Hispanic patterns that form the synthesis of a very particular and characteristic scenario.

For its elaboration, clay-filled molds are used. The handles, “ears”, and other details are molded separately, and then embedded on the whole piece. It is then left to dry, before getting a soft sanding. After that, the piece is given an “Engobe” bath (a watery mix of clays) with the dual purpose of covering the smallest pores and serving as a background base for the paint. The painting of the design is achieved by mixing local types (of clay) with different tones.

Burnished Clay acquires its name from the shimmer obtained by rubbing the pieces with a burnishing tool made from a mineral named pyrite. The burnishing process starts by sanding the raw piece with river stones or very thin wet sanding paper. Once the piece is dry, it is bathed with a color that serves as a background for the decoration. Colors applied to the piece are all from mineral origin, prepared by mixing liquefied clay from the region, known as “flor de tierra” (or the Soil’s flower in English). For painting, several different traditional brushes are used, some of them made from cat’s fur, dog fur, squirrel’s tail fur, or even Fox’s tail fur. Once the piece is decorated, it is then burnished. The whole production process comes before the piece is fired, therefore, if a piece is not well crafted, it may be damaged while in the fire. The firing temperatures oscillate around 600ºC (around 1112 Fahrenheit), traditionally using firewood obtain a low flame.

About the Artisan

Geronimo Ramos Flores

He is considered to be one of the great Potters of our time. It’s Terracotta colors make it a very particular type of clay in it’s finished state. This technique has a similar firing process as do most techniques, what changes here is both paint and finish; it is distinguishable because the pigments used are 100% natural and made by the artisan himself. Paint and finish are not noticeable until the piece is fired, this is when different hues of brown appear. This technique is considered a Prehispanic Legacy, and nowadays is still completely handcrafted, with natural pigments only found in the region.

It is known as “Canelo” due to it’s color’s similarity to Cinnamon. The clay is strained using a mesh for eliminating impurities. The clay is then mildly de-hydrated to achieve the artisan's desired clay consistency. When a clay ball is ready, it is laid over a smooth stone, and the shaping process begins. The clay is molded into an inverted and flattened cone; as it keeps on spinning, the clay is morphed into shapes of Jaguars, Pots, Pitchers and other creations. Once the piece's shape is finished, it is left under the sun for it to dry. This is the process's critical point, because this is when the clay can break.

Once the pieces are finished drying under the sun, they are put on top of a dry tree branch bed, and around it, vertically-standing logs. It is then fired at 600 to 700 Degrees Celsius, enough for the clay to lose its capacity for dissolving in water. This firing technique holds a great similarity to the one ancestrally used by the Mayan People who inhabited these lands.

In the end, when the pieces are ready for being painted, Potters use different minerals for obtaining natural colors to apply on the pieces. By sanding some of their selected minerals, and pouring the powder into a concave rock for it to be mixed with water, these artisans achieve red, black and even yellow tones. They then take their brushes, and with great skill, start decorating jaguars, pots, pitchers, salad bowls, pigeons, and many other pieces with the intention of bringing their art directly to you.

About The Artisan

Margarita Diaz Gomez

Being 43 years old, she is one of the most representative Chiapas-born Artisans, creating Jaguars that easily surpass the three-feet length among other beautiful and representative pieces.

She lives in a humble home filled with a warm and welcoming vibe to it, her doors are always open, and everyone is always well received.

Margarita started working when she was just 12 years old, crafting smaller pieces and following her parents’ tradition and teachings.

This is one of the few artistic processes in the world which is invariably attached to a Mystic sense, using the Spirit as the Art’s raw Material and Vice-versa. Any piece from this collection is based on Experiences associated with Peyote, it is from this interaction that such colors and forms observed in Wixarika arts come to be.

No other Prehispanic Culture uses such a high complexity color usage as that of the Wixarikas, their craft was born as an offering to the Gods, although it also a way to communicate to their community, and even to the rest of men, the Messages of their divinity. According to their beliefs, when communication between Gods and people exist, bright colors and Shapes open a Portal, called the Nierika. This is why their Yarn compositions are named Nierikas. Their art is created using representations of knowledge acquired during ceremonies.

Distinguished and much appreciated Artists are referred as “Chamanes”, properly called Maraakames, who embody their experiences with the Gods through their brilliant, intense, and even fluorescent color palette art.

The technique was traditionally used for producing water jugs that could keep the water cool.

About the artisan

Pablo Pajarito

The hands of five generations of talented and dedicated men and women have preserved the cultural heritage of their parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, and even their great-great-grandparents.
