This type of clay is sifted until it becomes a very fine sand, then, water is added to form a very soft, smooth, and malleable paste. It is with this clay paste that the molding of the pieces begins, using a wheel, from which vases, flower pots, and other creations come to be.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAfter a piece is molded, it is left outside to dry for two to three days, being exposed directly to the sunlight for any humidity to evaporate. This technique is considered a Prehispanic Legacy, and nowadays is still completely handcrafted, with natural pigments only found in the region.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is known as “Canelo” due to it’s color’s similarity to Cinnamon. It’s Terracotta colors make it a very particular type of clay in it’s finished state. This technique has a similar firing process as do most techniques, what changes here is both paint and finish; it is distinguishable because the pigments used are 100% natural and made by the artisan himself. Paint and finish are not noticeable until the piece is fired, this is when different hues of brown appear. It’s Terracotta colors make it a very particular type of clay in it’s finished state. This technique has a similar firing process as do most techniques, what changes here is both paint and finish; it is distinguishable because the pigments used are 100% natural and made by the artisan himself. Paint and finish are not noticeable until the piece is fired, this is when different hues of brown appear. This characteristic tone is obtained through a specific technique applied during the clay’s firing, which is done in a two mouthed furnace (a firewood furnace dug underground), during some point in the process, both “mouths” are closed, which triggers a physical reaction that reduces atmospheres, which is contrary to the regular oxidation of firing the piece. This firing process dates as long back as Prehispanic times. It is believed that, if clay is collected by women, the mines could stop naturally producing the material, therefor this is an activity traditionally exclusive to men.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eProducing the pieces starts with the clay’s collection, which is sifted and is then “laid to rest”, before it is kneaded and molded. Once the artisan has applied his magic to sculpting and molding the piece, it is left to dry under the sunlight for around four days. In the case the piece requires some form of fretwork, it is done on the fourth day for the piece not to be too fresh or too dry, which could make the process difficult.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAs time has passed, pieces are scratched in order to close the pores in the clay, and they are left to dry once again for them to be rubbed with \u003cstrong\u003equartz stones\u003c\/strong\u003e, which give the piece a very particular shimmer. Pieces are then taken out to be dried again, either under direct sunlight or under a shed for indirect light, and once dried, the \u003cstrong\u003equartz\u003c\/strong\u003e rubbing takes place again, all before letting the piece dry one last time for another four days before firing it. Once fired, pieces are washed, dried and ready to be sold. This characteristic tone is obtained through a specific technique applied during the clay’s firing, which is done in a two mouthed furnace (a firewood furnace dug underground), during some point in the process, both “mouths” are closed, which triggers a physical reaction that reduces atmospheres, which is contrary to the regular oxidation of firing the piece. This firing process dates as long back as Prehispanic times. It is believed that, if clay is collected by women, the mines could stop naturally producing the material, therefor this is an activity traditionally exclusive to men.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eProducing the pieces starts with the clay’s collection, which is sifted and is then “laid to rest”, before it is kneaded and molded. Once the artisan has applied his magic to sculpting and molding the piece, it is left to dry under the sunlight for around four days. In the case the piece requires some form of fretwork, it is done on the fourth day for the piece not to be too fresh or too dry, which could make the process difficult.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAs time has passed, pieces are scratched in order to close the pores in the clay, and they are left to dry once again for them to be rubbed with \u003cstrong\u003equartz stones\u003c\/strong\u003e, which give the piece a very particular shimmer. Pieces are then taken out to be dried again, either under direct sunlight or under a shed for indirect light, and once dried, the \u003cstrong\u003equartz\u003c\/strong\u003e rubbing takes place again, all before letting the piece dry one last time for another four days before firing it. Once fired, pieces are washed, dried and ready to be sold. Drawing mastery is one of its most notable features, represented with a “pure\" decorative style, which is predominant in these pieces, including abstract floral motives, symbolic animal representations and even geometric shapes. Traditional Mexican Elements are added to its themes: Such as the Eagle, Snake, Nahual (A Shapeshifting being commonly found in the Mexican mythology), Nopal (Cactus), and Pre-Hispanic patterns that form the synthesis of a very particular and characteristic scenario.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor its elaboration, clay-filled molds are used. The handles, “ears”, and other details are molded separately, and then embedded on the whole piece. It is then left to dry, before getting a soft sanding. After that, the piece is given an “Engobe” bath (a watery mix of clays) with the dual purpose of covering the smallest pores and serving as a background base for the paint. The painting of the design is achieved by mixing local types (of clay) with different tones.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eBurnished Clay\u003c\/strong\u003e acquires its name from the shimmer obtained by rubbing the pieces with a burnishing tool made from a mineral named pyrite. The burnishing process starts by sanding the raw piece with river stones or very thin wet sanding paper. Once the piece is dry, it is bathed with a color that serves as a background for the decoration. Colors applied to the piece are all from mineral origin, prepared by mixing liquefied clay from the region, known as “flor de tierra” (or the Soil’s flower in English). For painting, several different traditional brushes are used, some of them made from cat’s fur, dog fur, squirrel’s tail fur, or even Fox’s tail fur. Once the piece is decorated, it is then burnished. The whole production process comes before the piece is fired, therefore, if a piece is not well crafted, it may be damaged while in the fire.
