Drawing mastery is one of its most notable features, represented with a “pure" decorative style, which is predominant in these pieces, including abstract floral motives, symbolic animal representations and even geometric shapes. Traditional Mexican Elements are added to its themes: Such as the Eagle, Snake, Nahual (A Shapeshifting being commonly found in the Mexican mythology), Nopal (Cactus), and Pre-Hispanic patterns that form the synthesis of a very particular and characteristic scenario.

For its elaboration, clay-filled molds are used. The handles, “ears”, and other details are molded separately, and then embedded on the whole piece. It is then left to dry, before getting a soft sanding. After that, the piece is given an “Engobe” bath (a watery mix of clays) with the dual purpose of covering the smallest pores and serving as a background base for the paint. The painting of the design is achieved by mixing local types (of clay) with different tones.

Burnished Clay acquires its name from the shimmer obtained by rubbing the pieces with a burnishing tool made from a mineral named pyrite. The burnishing process starts by sanding the raw piece with river stones or very thin wet sanding paper. Once the piece is dry, it is bathed with a color that serves as a background for the decoration. Colors applied to the piece are all from mineral origin, prepared by mixing liquefied clay from the region, known as “flor de tierra” (or the Soil’s flower in English). For painting, several different traditional brushes are used, some of them made from cat’s fur, dog fur, squirrel’s tail fur, or even Fox’s tail fur. Once the piece is decorated, it is then burnished. The whole production process comes before the piece is fired, therefore, if a piece is not well crafted, it may be damaged while in the fire. The firing temperatures oscillate around 600ºC (around 1112 Fahrenheit), traditionally using firewood obtain a low flame.

About the Artisan

Geronimo Ramos Flores

He is considered to be one of the great Potters of our time.

The clay is strained using a mesh for eliminating impurities. The clay is then mildly de-hydrated to achieve the artisan's desired clay consistency. When a clay ball is ready, it is laid over a smooth stone, and the shaping process begins. The clay is molded into an inverted and flattened cone; as it keeps on spinning, the clay is morphed into shapes of Jaguars, Pots, Pitchers and other creations. Once the piece's shape is finished, it is left under the sun for it to dry. This is the process's critical point, because this is when the clay can break.

Once the pieces are finished drying under the sun, they are put on top of a dry tree branch bed, and around it, vertically-standing logs. It is then fired at 600 to 700 Degrees Celsius, enough for the clay to lose its capacity for dissolving in water. This firing technique holds a great similarity to the one ancestrally used by the Mayan People who inhabited these lands.

In the end, when the pieces are ready for being painted, Potters use different minerals for obtaining natural colors to apply on the pieces. By sanding some of their selected minerals, and pouring the powder into a concave rock for it to be mixed with water, these artisans achieve red, black and even yellow tones. They then take their brushes, and with great skill, start decorating jaguars, pots, pitchers, salad bowls, pigeons, and many other pieces with the intention of bringing their art directly to you.

About The Artisan

Margarita Diaz Gomez

Being 43 years old, she is one of the most representative Chiapas-born Artisans, creating Jaguars that easily surpass the three-feet length among other beautiful and representative pieces.

She lives in a humble home filled with a warm and welcoming vibe to it, her doors are always open, and everyone is always well received.

Margarita started working when she was just 12 years old, crafting smaller pieces and following her parents’ tradition and teachings.

This characteristic tone is obtained through a specific technique applied during the clay’s firing, which is done in a two mouthed furnace (a firewood furnace dug underground), during some point in the process, both “mouths” are closed, which triggers a physical reaction that reduces atmospheres, which is contrary to the regular oxidation of firing the piece. This firing process dates as long back as Prehispanic times. It is believed that, if clay is collected by women, the mines could stop naturally producing the material, therefor this is an activity traditionally exclusive to men.

Producing the pieces starts with the clay’s collection, which is sifted and is then “laid to rest”, before it is kneaded and molded. Once the artisan has applied his magic to sculpting and molding the piece, it is left to dry under the sunlight for around four days. In the case the piece requires some form of fretwork, it is done on the fourth day for the piece not to be too fresh or too dry, which could make the process difficult.

As time has passed, pieces are scratched in order to close the pores in the clay, and they are left to dry once again for them to be rubbed with quartz stones, which give the piece a very particular shimmer.

Pieces are then taken out to be dried again, either under direct sunlight or under a shed for indirect light, and once dried, the quartz rubbing takes place again, all before letting the piece dry one last time for another four days before firing it. Once fired, pieces are washed, dried and ready to be sold. It’s Terracotta colors make it a very particular type of clay in it’s finished state. This technique has a similar firing process as do most techniques, what changes here is both paint and finish; it is distinguishable because the pigments used are 100% natural and made by the artisan himself. Paint and finish are not noticeable until the piece is fired, this is when different hues of brown appear. This technique is considered a Prehispanic Legacy, and nowadays is still completely handcrafted, with natural pigments only found in the region.

It is known as “Canelo” due to it’s color’s similarity to Cinnamon.

Pieces are then taken out to be dried again, either under direct sunlight or under a shed for indirect light, and once dried, the quartz rubbing takes place again, all before letting the piece dry one last time for another four days before firing it. Once fired, pieces are washed, dried and ready to be sold.

Pieces are then taken out to be dried again, either under direct sunlight or under a shed for indirect light, and once dried, the quartz rubbing takes place again, all before letting the piece dry one last time for another four days before firing it. Once fired, pieces are washed, dried and ready to be sold. Among the pieces produced, one can find skulls, cajetes, jugs, pots, Mezcal pots, animal figures, and diverse ornament figures, as well as the famous “Carlomagno” pieces, all staying close to traditional techniques.

About the Artisan

Omar Fabian Canseco

He was born in the city of Oaxaca, in San Bartolo Coyotepec, a pottery town with an important tradition in the prehispanic era. At first Omar shied away from the family business and went on to receive a Bachelors degree in Graphic Design. After a period of time working in his field Omar decided to return to the family trade making his own creations with Black Clay. It dates from the Colonial Era, and it stands out because of its cheerful and joy-filled figurines, with several different motives such as Lions, Dogs, Roosters, Trees of Life, and Noah’s arks, among others.

Betus Clay takes its name because; before firing and painting the piece, it is given a Betus oil bath (which is made from the resin that comes from Birch Trees). This type of pottery’s most characteristic features are the striking, fun and brilliant colors applied to Fantastic Animals, playful Bible Characters, and ingenuous architectural reproductions which are molded directly in the clay, with some other details produced in clay or plaster casts. Nowadays, some artisans mix traditional and modern processes to produce these crafts.

The process starts with the collection of clay in Tonala’s Mines, big chunks of soil are pulverized and then mixed with a stronger type of clay called “Liga” (a binding clay), the clays are kneaded and molded into unique forms. The oven is prepared, and pieces, sculpted days before, are fired. It is before firing, that the clay has a dark tone to it. The pieces must be dried outdoors before being fired, otherwise they may explode while in the oven. Each figure is then rubbed with Betus (Birch Tree) Oil, right before being fired, giving a lacquered aspect to the finished pieces. The firing process is carried on with a low temperature compared to other types of ceramics. Ovens are simple brick holes covered in antique tiles. After the pieces are fired, they are colored with industrial anilines, the final coating of Betus oil is applied directly with the hands, rubbed in without using any brushes. As of today, the usage of acrylic paints and synthetic lacquer have given brighter and more colorful figures, as well as making a faster production process.

About the Artisan

Gerardo Ortega

Four generations of tradition do converge in Gerardo Ortega’s “Ortega’s Folk” Workshop, who, along with his artisan brothers, has been crafting surreal and fantastical pieces for over 40 years, with one of Santa Cruz de las Huertas’, Tonala, Jalisco, most representative techniques: Betus Clay.

His grandparents used to work in the fields, for both reap and sow, and on their free time, they dedicated to their art’s development. Gerardo’s grandmother designed pieces such as roosters, other animals, chandeliers, fruits and other surreal figures.

Gerardo Ortega is very known for his Trees of Life.
