This type of pottery’s most characteristic features are the striking, fun and brilliant colors applied to Fantastic Animals, playful Bible Characters, and ingenuous architectural reproductions which are molded directly in the clay, with some other details produced in clay or plaster casts. Nowadays, some artisans mix traditional and modern processes to produce these crafts.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe process starts with the collection of clay in Tonala’s Mines, big chunks of soil are pulverized and then mixed with a stronger type of clay called “Liga” (a binding clay), the clays are kneaded and molded into unique forms. The oven is prepared, and pieces, sculpted days before, are fired. It is before firing, that the clay has a dark tone to it. The pieces must be dried outdoors before being fired, otherwise they may explode while in the oven. Each figure is then rubbed with Betus (Birch Tree) Oil, right before being fired, giving a lacquered aspect to the finished pieces. The firing process is carried on with a low temperature compared to other types of ceramics. Ovens are simple brick holes covered in antique tiles. After the pieces are fired, they are colored with industrial anilines, the final coating of Betus oil is applied directly with the hands, rubbed in without using any brushes. The clay is strained using a mesh for eliminating impurities. The clay is then mildly de-hydrated to achieve the artisan's desired clay consistency. When a clay ball is ready, it is laid over a smooth stone, and the shaping process begins. The clay is molded into an inverted and flattened cone; as it keeps on spinning, the clay is morphed into shapes of Jaguars, Pots, Pitchers and other creations. Once the piece's shape is finished, it is left under the sun for it to dry. This is the process's critical point, because this is when the clay can break.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOnce the pieces are finished drying under the sun, they are put on top of a dry tree branch bed, and around it, vertically-standing logs. It is then fired at 600 to 700 Degrees Celsius, enough for the clay to lose its capacity for dissolving in water. This firing technique holds a great similarity to the one ancestrally used by the Mayan People who inhabited these lands.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the end, when the pieces are ready for being painted, Potters use different minerals for obtaining natural colors to apply on the pieces. By sanding some of their selected minerals, and pouring the powder into a concave rock for it to be mixed with water, these artisans achieve red, black and even yellow tones. It was then, when she turned 14 years old, that she started working and crafting bigger pieces, such as pigeon-shaped flower pots, and through perseverance and dedication, she crafted her first Jaguar Sculpture by age 31.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEach jaguar \u003cstrong\u003eMargarita\u003c\/strong\u003e makes is completely hand-sculpted, no molds are used, her first references for molding the figure were mostly from pictures in magazines, and some videos from the animal, trying to replicate the figure of a living jaguar, and achieving it with incredible precision. Her works are complex, and get their start with the extraction of the clays from the clay pits, having them completely cleaned of impurities and preparing the clay with the right malleable proportion for the sculpting process followed by the decoration of the pieces.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMargarita’s\u003c\/strong\u003e preferred working spot is her front porch, she spends long hours meticulously painting her pieces there, with all care and dedication to her art. The clay is strained using a mesh for eliminating impurities. The clay is then mildly de-hydrated to achieve the artisan's desired clay consistency. When a clay ball is ready, it is laid over a smooth stone, and the shaping process begins. The clay is molded into an inverted and flattened cone; as it keeps on spinning, the clay is morphed into shapes of Jaguars, Pots, Pitchers and other creations. Once the piece's shape is finished, it is left under the sun for it to dry. This is the process's critical point, because this is when the clay can break.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOnce the pieces are finished drying under the sun, they are put on top of a dry tree branch bed, and around it, vertically-standing logs. It dates from the Colonial Era, and it stands out because of its cheerful and joy-filled figurines, with several different motives such as Lions, Dogs, Roosters, Trees of Life, and Noah’s arks, among others.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eBetus Clay\u003c\/strong\u003e takes its name because; before firing and painting the piece, it is given a Betus oil bath (which is made from the resin that comes from Birch Trees). This type of pottery’s most characteristic features are the striking, fun and brilliant colors applied to Fantastic Animals, playful Bible Characters, and ingenuous architectural reproductions which are molded directly in the clay, with some other details produced in clay or plaster casts. Nowadays, some artisans mix traditional and modern processes to produce these crafts.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe process starts with the collection of clay in Tonala’s Mines, big chunks of soil are pulverized and then mixed with a stronger type of clay called “Liga” (a binding clay), the clays are kneaded and molded into unique forms. The oven is prepared, and pieces, sculpted days before, are fired. It is before firing, that the clay has a dark tone to it. The pieces must be dried outdoors before being fired, otherwise they may explode while in the oven. It dates from the Colonial Era, and it stands out because of its cheerful and joy-filled figurines, with several different motives such as Lions, Dogs, Roosters, Trees of Life, and Noah’s arks, among others.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eBetus Clay\u003c\/strong\u003e takes its name because; before firing and painting the piece, it is given a Betus oil bath (which is made from the resin that comes from Birch Trees). This type of pottery’s most characteristic features are the striking, fun and brilliant colors applied to Fantastic Animals, playful Bible Characters, and ingenuous architectural reproductions which are molded directly in the clay, with some other details produced in clay or plaster casts. Nowadays, some artisans mix traditional and modern processes to produce these crafts.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe process starts with the collection of clay in Tonala’s Mines, big chunks of soil are pulverized and then mixed with a stronger type of clay called “Liga” (a binding clay), the clays are kneaded and molded into unique forms. The oven is prepared, and pieces, sculpted days before, are fired. It is before firing, that the clay has a dark tone to it. The pieces must be dried outdoors before being fired, otherwise they may explode while in the oven. Each figure is then rubbed with Betus (Birch Tree) Oil, right before being fired, giving a lacquered aspect to the finished pieces. The firing process is carried on with a low temperature compared to other types of ceramics. Ovens are simple brick holes covered in antique tiles. After the pieces are fired, they are colored with industrial anilines, the final coating of Betus oil is applied directly with the hands, rubbed in without using any brushes. The clay is strained using a mesh for eliminating impurities. The clay is then mildly de-hydrated to achieve the artisan's desired clay consistency. When a clay ball is ready, it is laid over a smooth stone, and the shaping process begins. The clay is molded into an inverted and flattened cone; as it keeps on spinning, the clay is morphed into shapes of Jaguars, Pots, Pitchers and other creations. Once the piece's shape is finished, it is left under the sun for it to dry. This is the process's critical point, because this is when the clay can break.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOnce the pieces are finished drying under the sun, they are put on top of a dry tree branch bed, and around it, vertically-standing logs. It is then fired at 600 to 700 Degrees Celsius, enough for the clay to lose its capacity for dissolving in water. This firing technique holds a great similarity to the one ancestrally used by the Mayan People who inhabited these lands.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the end, when the pieces are ready for being painted, Potters use different minerals for obtaining natural colors to apply on the pieces. By sanding some of their selected minerals, and pouring the powder into a concave rock for it to be mixed with water, these artisans achieve red, black and even yellow tones. Amatenango del Valle, is a Tzeltal town characterized for the beautiful and original pottery pieces made by local artisan women using pre-Hispanic techniques. It is located 21.74 miles Southeast of San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, at the top of a hill surrounded by a fertile valley covered in corn fields. This is a town of Mayan origins. Amatenango del Valle is known as the capital of pottery in Chiapas due to the fact that half the population practices this activity, which is exclusive for women, who at the early age of 10, start learning how to work with clay.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor the production of their products, artisan women extract clay from a mountain located outside their town. They take it home, knead it and then cover it in sand for consistency. After that, they mold it, polish it and paint the pieces using rocks from the river to then fire them in an oven made with firewood cut by the local men. The process of mixing sand and water, molding the clay to then dry it and in wood ovens evokes the primal act of creation in Mayan worldview. Exceeding clay is cut delicately by using threads, and afterwards, using a damp cloth, they start to softly burnish the surface of the pieces.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe amazing reddish tones on the pieces comes from a unique coloring process using a watery solution of “Charanda”, a local soil-based pigmentation process that enhances and livens up the colors of the piece, all while sealing the smallest pores on the outside of it. It dates from the Colonial Era, and it stands out because of its cheerful and joy-filled figurines, with several different motives such as Lions, Dogs, Roosters, Trees of Life, and Noah’s arks, among others.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eBetus Clay\u003c\/strong\u003e takes its name because; before firing and painting the piece, it is given a Betus oil bath (which is made from the resin that comes from Birch Trees). This type of pottery’s most characteristic features are the striking, fun and brilliant colors applied to Fantastic Animals, playful Bible Characters, and ingenuous architectural reproductions which are molded directly in the clay, with some other details produced in clay or plaster casts. Nowadays, some artisans mix traditional and modern processes to produce these crafts.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe process starts with the collection of clay in Tonala’s Mines, big chunks of soil are pulverized and then mixed with a stronger type of clay called “Liga” (a binding clay), the clays are kneaded and molded into unique forms. The oven is prepared, and pieces, sculpted days before, are fired. It is before firing, that the clay has a dark tone to it. The pieces must be dried outdoors before being fired, otherwise they may explode while in the oven. Each figure is then rubbed with Betus (Birch Tree) Oil, right before being fired, giving a lacquered aspect to the finished pieces. The firing process is carried on with a low temperature compared to other types of ceramics. Ovens are simple brick holes covered in antique tiles. After the pieces are fired, they are colored with industrial anilines, the final coating of Betus oil is applied directly with the hands, rubbed in without using any brushes. It dates from the Colonial Era, and it stands out because of its cheerful and joy-filled figurines, with several different motives such as Lions, Dogs, Roosters, Trees of Life, and Noah’s arks, among others.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eBetus Clay\u003c\/strong\u003e takes its name because; before firing and painting the piece, it is given a Betus oil bath (which is made from the resin that comes from Birch Trees). This type of pottery’s most characteristic features are the striking, fun and brilliant colors applied to Fantastic Animals, playful Bible Characters, and ingenuous architectural reproductions which are molded directly in the clay, with some other details produced in clay or plaster casts. Nowadays, some artisans mix traditional and modern processes to produce these crafts.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe process starts with the collection of clay in Tonala’s Mines, big chunks of soil are pulverized and then mixed with a stronger type of clay called “Liga” (a binding clay), the clays are kneaded and molded into unique forms. The oven is prepared, and pieces, sculpted days before, are fired. It is before firing, that the clay has a dark tone to it. The pieces must be dried outdoors before being fired, otherwise they may explode while in the oven. Each figure is then rubbed with Betus (Birch Tree) Oil, right before being fired, giving a lacquered aspect to the finished pieces. The firing process is carried on with a low temperature compared to other types of ceramics. Ovens are simple brick holes covered in antique tiles. After the pieces are fired, they are colored with industrial anilines, the final coating of Betus oil is applied directly with the hands, rubbed in without using any brushes. The clay is strained using a mesh for eliminating impurities. The clay is then mildly de-hydrated to achieve the artisan's desired clay consistency. When a clay ball is ready, it is laid over a smooth stone, and the shaping process begins. The clay is molded into an inverted and flattened cone; as it keeps on spinning, the clay is morphed into shapes of Jaguars, Pots, Pitchers and other creations. Once the piece's shape is finished, it is left under the sun for it to dry. This is the process's critical point, because this is when the clay can break.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOnce the pieces are finished drying under the sun, they are put on top of a dry tree branch bed, and around it, vertically-standing logs. It is then fired at 600 to 700 Degrees Celsius, enough for the clay to lose its capacity for dissolving in water. This firing technique holds a great similarity to the one ancestrally used by the Mayan People who inhabited these lands.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the end, when the pieces are ready for being painted, Potters use different minerals for obtaining natural colors to apply on the pieces. By sanding some of their selected minerals, and pouring the powder into a concave rock for it to be mixed with water, these artisans achieve red, black and even yellow tones. Her works are complex, and get their start with the extraction of the clays from the clay pits, having them completely cleaned of impurities and preparing the clay with the right malleable proportion for the sculpting process followed by the decoration of the pieces.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMargarita’s\u003c\/strong\u003e preferred working spot is her front porch, she spends long hours meticulously painting her pieces there, with all care and dedication to her art. It is located 21.74 miles Southeast of San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, at the top of a hill surrounded by a fertile valley covered in corn fields. This is a town of Mayan origins. Amatenango del Valle is known as the capital of pottery in Chiapas due to the fact that half the population practices this activity, which is exclusive for women, who at the early age of 10, start learning how to work with clay.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor the production of their products, artisan women extract clay from a mountain located outside their town. They take it home, knead it and then cover it in sand for consistency. After that, they mold it, polish it and paint the pieces using rocks from the river to then fire them in an oven made with firewood cut by the local men.
